A Dialogue with the World ·Pacific Future Forum 2020: How to Tackle Global Challenges Facing the Future

From December 16 to 18, 2020, Phoenix Satellite Television and Phoenix New Media, together with the Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding (iGCU) of Peking University, the American Chamber of Commerce in China and the China-United States Exchange Foundation, organized the "A Dialogue with the World · Pacific Future Forum 2020" forum. The forum was divided into seven sub-forums revolving around different themes: diplomacy, science and technology, economy and trade, public health, climate, youth, and poverty reduction. The most important figures in the political, economic, industrial and academic fields around the world were specially invited to explore and discuss how to tackle global challenges and contribute to future global development.

Jia Qingguo, Director of the iGCU of Peking University, Wang Dong, Executive Director of the iGCU and Li Qiangmin, former consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, delivered keynote speeches at the first sub-forum on "China-US Relations and Asia-Pacific Order." Joseph Nye, former US Assistant Secretary of State, David Firestein, president of the Bush Foundation for US-China Relations, Daniel Russel, former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Joshua Cooper Ramo, Vice Chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc. and Zheng Yongnian, Dean of the Advanced Institute of Global and Contemporary China Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) participated in the discussion via video.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region,Chairman of the China-United States Exchange Foundation and Senior Advisor of iGCU, sent a congratulatory message to the forum. Ai Deming, vice president and secretary of the board of directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Joseph Nye, former US Assistant Secretary of Defense and professor of the Harvard Kennedy School, and Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, delivered keynote speeches.

As the presidential election came to an end in the US, China-US relations encountered an opportunity for redefinition. Where will China-US relations go as the most important bilateral relations in the world? Will the two countries continue to decouple or wrestle with limited force? The first sub-forum of "A Dialogue with the World · Pacific Future Forum 2020" - the diplomacy sub-forum - was titled "China-US Relations and Asia-Pacific Order" and focused on China-US Relations and their impacts on the international community with the expectation that a new paradigm of interactions between big powers could be reached through dialogue and discussion. At "A Dialogue with the World · Pacific Future Forum 2020", a series of other topics including the world's most urgent issue public health, as well as free trade and global order also caught attention. Zha Daojiong, member of the Academic Committee of iGCU and professor of the School of International Studies of Peking University delivered a speech at the public health sub-forum with the theme of "Covid-19 Crisis and International Cooperation". Huo Jianguo, member of the Academic Committee of iGCU and Vice President of the China Society for World Trade Organization Studies, and former Dean of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce of China, and Chen Wenling, member of the Academic Committee of iGCU and chief economist of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges expressed insightful views at the economic and trade sub-forum themed "Free Trade and Global Order".
