U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's provocative visit to Taiwan on 2 August, 2022 has attracted worldwide attention. In one recently published article by Prof. Huang Jing, Dean of the Institute on International and Regional Studies at Beijing Language and Culture University, a detailed analysis of the consequences and impacts of Pelosi's trip was provided. ["The Rational and Irrational Choices in Pelosi's Visit to Taiwan: Consequences and Impacts"].

In the article, Prof. Huangsuggested that people of Taiwan and pro-Taiwan independence supporters would be the “biggest losers” following Pelosi's visit, as Beijing suspended some trade with Taiwan and began unprecedented large-scale military drills around the island. He further argued that Pelosi's visit was for her own political gains and aimed of winning Democrat votes ahead of midterm elections in the United States.

“It has once again shown political polarization in the U.S. and how the political correctness has overridden the rational decision-making... Pelosi's visit has raised tensions across the TW strait & contributed to the deterioration of China-U.S. relations... Contrarily, China's response/decision-making were more rational. It avoided direct confrontation with the U.S., without compromising on China's core interests.”
