2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK diplomatic relations. The article by Moon Chung-in (Chairman of the Sejong Institute, Republic of Korea)- “View the bigger picture”, was published in China Daily, reviewing the evolution of the China-ROK relations in the past thirty years and discussing the challenges facing the healthy development of the bilateral ties.
In the article, Prof. Moon first points out that both bilateral investments as well as human and cultural exchanges (including high-level elite contacts) between China and ROK have grown and expanded impressively in the past three decades. However, the future development of the bilteral ties still faces challenges. According to Prof. Moon, the most formidable challenges facing the future China-ROK relations would come from the geopolitical dynamics. Besides, the geoeconomic conflicts, clashes of national identity and the subsequent deteriorating mutual perceptions among the public could all pose barriers to the positive development of the bilateral relations.
Quoting Prof. Moon, “the bilateral relationship should be neither zero-sum (win-lose) nor negative sum (lose-lose). Both countries should strive for a positive sum relationship...There should be an awareness that healthy amd mutually beneficial bilateral relations are essential for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.”
