On August 2, Prof. Shi Yinhong (Professor of International Relations at the Renmin University of China), was interviewed by ifeng news, talking about the impact of Ms. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan as well as how the cross-strait relations and China-U.S. relations might evolve in the forseeable future.
Prof. Shi pointed out that in the past few years, the U.S. has been hollowing out the 'One-China Principle' by showing support to Taipei in various ways. Pelosi's trip to Taiwan was undoubtedly a part of the U.S. strategy of using Taiwan to contain China and providing support for 'Taiwan independence'.
Prof. Shi proposed that following Pelosi's trip, it is likely that more U.S. lawmakers would visit Taiwan to reaffirm the U.S. support for Taipei. Thus, China's strong response to Pelosi's visit was of particular importance (eg. "unprecedented" military drills around Taiwan), as it would show China's firm determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Concerning the future relationship between China and the U.S., Prof. Shi stressed that the main theme would be managing strategic competition to avoid conflict. Quoting from Prof. Shi: "In order to avoid conflicts, it's essential for both parties to clarify their core interests, uphold the principle of mutual respect, and view each other in a fair and objective light."
