2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). A recent article by Mr. Yu Jiang (Vice PresidentofChina Institute of International Studies) and Zhang Yuhuan (Research Fellow at the Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy Research Center) discusses the BRI’s ten-year journey. The authors reckon that the BRI has evolved into a global cooperative effort transcending the historical Silk Road, benefiting the world in the six following areas.
Progress and Significance: The BRI has achieved international cooperation and common development with China's active contribution and collaboration with BRI partners worldwide. It has become a global pathway for win-win cooperation.
Policy Alignment: China has signed over 200 cooperation agreements with many countries and international organizations. The BRI aligns with national and regional strategies, becoming a pathway for global cooperation.
Infrastructure Connectivity: The "six corridors and six routes" infrastructure framework has been improved with efforts from BRI countries. Significant projects like railway tunnels, high-speed rail, and freight train services have enhanced connectivity and improved lives along the routes.
Trade Facilitation: China has become the largest trading partner for 25 BRI countries, with increased bilateral trade and investments. Free trade agreements and investments in economic zones have facilitated economic stability and growth.
Financial Connectivity: Institutions like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and Silk Road Fund have addressed infrastructure funding gaps and empowered emerging markets and developing countries. These institutions have provided crucial support to the global financial governance system.
People-to-People Bonds: The BRI focuses on fostering connections between people. Projects related to agriculture, healthcare, and poverty alleviation have improved livelihoods and brought tangible benefits to local communities.
