Prof. Zha Daojiong (Professor of International Political Economy at the School of International School, Peking University;iGCU Academic Committee Member) recently published an article on Huanqiu.com discussing the meaning and implications of the term “Global South” in different contexts.

Prof. Zha notes that the term originated from the Cold War era and describes poor, dependent, and non-aligned countries. Back then, the term also reflected the newly independent countries’ collective political and diplomatic behavior, especially in multilateral organizations such as the UN.

The term evolved with the changes in the international development agenda, from promoting GDP growth to establishing a new economic order, affirming development rights, and implementing sustainable development strategies.

Prof. Zha argues that Global South is a term that implies the diversity and complexity of global development, as some developing countries achieved economic growth and challenged the traditional development models and norms.

Prof. Zha further analyzes the factors that have made the term “Global South” more popular in the 21st century, such as the geographic gap, identity politics, and the explanatory power of traditional development economics.
