In August,Professor Wu Xinbo (Professor and Dean of the Institute of International Studies atFudan University; iGCU Academic Committee Member)wasinterviewed bytheGuancha.cn on therecentvisit of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to China.
During the interview, Prof. Wu discussed the significanceofMs.Raimondo’s visitandthe current state and prospectsforChina-U.S. economic and trade relations. Prof. Wu highlighted that the interaction between China and the U.S. on economic and trade issues has now entereditssecond stage. This phaseinvolvescreatinga “commercial issues working group” tofosterdialogue and consultation on trade and investment issuesandexchanginginformation on export controls to reduce misunderstandings and conflicts.
Prof. Wu critically analyzed the U.S. policy of balancing trade and investment with China while imposing sanctions and restrictions on China inareaslinkedto national security. He argues that such a policy is contradictory and unrealisticand that the US should abandon its strategic goal of containingChinatoimprovebilateral trade relations.Prof. Wu alsoreckonsthat for the bilateral ties to develop,bothnations shouldstriveto promote pragmatic cooperationtosolveexisting problems in trade and economicsand facilitatepeople-to-peopleexchanges.
