Prof. Tang Shiqi: Being of Concreteness and Possibility: A Restudy of Heidegger's Thought

On September13, 2024, the 7th session of"Words in Dongming"was successfully held, featuringProf. Tang Shiqi,Dean of the School ofInternationalStudies at Peking University(PKU),as the distinguished guest. Prof. Tang discussed discussedhis new book,"Being of ConcretenessandPossibility: A Restudy of Heidegger's Thought,"published in January 2024. The event was co-organized by the School ofInternationalStudies (SIS)and iGCU. Prof. Wang Dong(ExecutiveDirector of iGCU; Professor of the SIS, PKU),along withMs. LI Ruixuan, Ms. Feng Yixin from the Youth League Committee of the SIS,and10otherstudentsrepresentatives,alsoparticipated in the event.

Prof. Tangelaboratedon Heidegger's philosophical thoughts, noting his focus on the individuality, variability, possibility, and subjectivity of human knowledge. He explained thatHeidegger's philosophy deconstructs traditional Western philosophical thoughts,providing new perspective for addressing global crises. Prof. Tangsuggested that the philosophy ofHeidegger encourages peopleto rethink aboutthemeaningof philosophyas more than thepursuit of absolutes–it isa tool to navigate the complexities of life and modern existential crises.

During the open discussionsession, studentsengaged ontopics such asthe significance ofHeidegger'sphilosophyin altering the course of philosophy in continentalEurope, the relationship between philosophy and politics, and thepractical implications ofHeidegger’s abstract concepts and philosophical thoughts.

Prof. Tang also shared his thoughts on the relationship between technology and humanity,stressingthatwhileHeideggeradvocated for rebuilding the bonds between human andnature, hewas by no means, against technological advancement andscientificdevelopment. Instead, Heideggeremphasized the importance of self-reflection and self-consicousness in the face of technological advancements.“Those soulful experience and precious moments in life that stir our emotions can’t be created by technologies. Young people like you should cherish your youth and live life to the fullest,” Prof.Tangadvised.
