The President of Global Policy and Advocacy of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation visited the School of International Studies of Peking University

On the afternoon of April 8, 2014, at the invitation of the International Center for Youth Development of the School of International Studies, Dr. Mark Sussman, President of the Global Policy and Advocacy Program of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, visited Peking University, and gave a speech titled “Changing the World by Innovative Philanthropy” in the “Dialogue World” series-youth and public welfare activity.

Before the activity, Vice-president Li Yansong met with Dr. Mark Sussman.Li Yansong first introduced the relevant situation of Peking University to the guests, and expressed his desire to cooperate with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in health and development.Dr. Mark Sussman spoke highly of Peking University’s researches and contributions in the field of global health and development, and expressed his gratitude to Peking University for its efforts in cultivating and delivering a large number of talents for public service organizations at home and abroad.Jia Qingguo, Dean of School of International Studies, introduced the situations of the School, African Studies Center and International Center for Youth Development.

Yan Jun, Secretary-General of Beijing Forum and Deputy minister of Office of International Relations, Peking University, Fan Shiming, Deputy Dean of School of International Studies, Peking University,Liu Haifang, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of African Studies Center, and Hu Jun, European and American Minister of Peking University Education Foundation, attended the meeting.

Adam Gerstenmier, Special Assistant to the President of Global Policy and Advocacy of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Geng Ming, Deputy Director of policy advocacy in China, Yang Jianyue, Deputy Director of media in China and Zhang Jing, media officer in China, accompanied Dr. Mark Sussman to pay the visit.

At the end of the meeting, Dr. Mark Sussman, on behalf of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, attended the “Dialogue World” series-youth and public welfare activity, and gave a speech on “Innovating Charity and Changing the World.” The speech was presided over by Fan Shiming, Deputy Dean of School of International Studies.In his speech, Dr. Mark Sussman that human is expected to eliminate inequality in health in 2035 as long as the parties join hands and China can play a unique leadership role in this global effort; and expressed that Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation hopes to work with China to promote global health in more areas in the future.

The “Dialogue World” series --- youth and public welfare activity was jointly sponsored by Peking University and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and undertaken by International Center for Youth Development.

Brief introduction to Dr. Mark Sussman:

President of global policy and advocacy and country program of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, responsible for managing the strategic relationship between the foundation and the government, non-governmental organizations and other major partners; committed to raising and strengthening global concerns, actions and resource investment in development and health issues.At the same time, Mark led the foundation’s regional and country offices in Europe, Africa, China, and India to strengthen cooperation with regional governments and other important partners to help everyone enjoy a healthy and productive life.

Born in South Africa, Dr. Mark is an outstanding graduate of Harvard University and a doctor in International Relations at Oxford University.He joined Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007 as a Director of global development, policy and advocacy.From 2005 to 2007, he served as a senior advisor on policy and strategic communication in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, responsible for the reform and modernization of the United Nations system.From 2000 to 2005, during his tenure as policy Director of the Office of Management of the United Nations Development Programme, he designed and implemented the restructuring of the organization and expanded its business scope to new directions such as the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.He previously served as a correspondent for the Financial Times in Johannesburg in South Africa, London and Washington. His reports focused on White House’s politics, international trade policies, social welfare system, and the election of former President Mandela of South Africa.
