General Raymond Odierno, Chief of Staff for the U. S. Army, visited Peking University

On the afternoon of February 21, 2014, General Raymond Odierno, Chief of Staff for the U. S. Army, visited Peking University. Wang Enge, President of Peking University, and Jia Qingguo, Dean of School of International Studies, met with guests in Central Hall of Lake House.President Wang Enge warmly welcomed General Odierno and briefed him on the exchanges between Peking University and American colleges and universities.General Odierno thanked President Wang for his warm reception and hoped to establish more contacts with Peking University on the basis of the visit.

General Odierno held a symposium with representatives of teachers and students from the School of International Studies

At the end of the meeting, General Odierno held a symposium in the West Hall of Lake House with representatives of teachers and students from the School of International Studies, Peking University.Dean Jia Qingguo presided over the symposium, and gave a brief introduction to the personal experience of General Odierno.General Odierno shared with teachers and students his main responsibilities and career experience in the US Army. He said that he was pleased to have the opportunity to exchange views with teachers and students at Peking University to improve understanding.In the following question and answer session, the representatives of teachers and students and General Odierno discussed the international environment, military principles, the role and status of women in the US Army, the relationship between the army of the two countries and local hot spots.General Odierno stressed that future military responsibilities should be communicated to all sides and military exchanges will be one of the important aspects of enhancing China-US exchanges. Thus, the US and China should actively engage in dialogue and build trust, which is of far-reaching significance for the world.

Associate Professor Yu Wanli and Associate Professor Wang Dong fromInstitute for Global Cooperation and Understanding, Peking University also attended the meeting and discussion.

General Raymond Odierno’s resume: born in 1954 and graduated from US Naval War College.After that, he served in the European Army and the 7th Army of the US in Germany. He served as a junior commander in the 41st and 56th Field Artillery Brigades, and transferred to the 18th Airborne Army in Fort Bragg after completing the senior course for artillery officers. He took part in Operation Desert Storm as a battalion commander.He once served as Deputy Chief of the First Armored Division, Chairman’s assistant of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and military adviser to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He replaced General Petraeus as commander of the US Army in Iraq in September 2008, and returned in September 2010 as commander of the Joint Forces Command, and was nominated as Chief of Staff of the Army in May 2011 to replace General Martin Dempsey, who was nominated as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff.
