On April 16, 2021, “Future of China-U.S. Relations: Global Development and Cultural Dialogue” was co-organized online by the Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding(iGCU), Peking University and the Georgetown Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues. 23 students from Peking University and Georgetown University exchanged ideas on China-US relations and other important issues of global development.
Wang Dong, Executive Director of iGCU of Peking University and professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University, presided over the opening ceremony. He expressed a warm welcome to all participating students, and highly praised the enthusiasm for people-to-people exchanges and the spirit of academic excellency of students from both universities.
Thomas Banchoff, professor and vice president of Georgetown University expressed his hope in his opening remarks that participants would be frank in their conversation and promote mutual understanding through mutual respect.
Professor Jia Qingguo, member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC, director of iGCU of Peking University and former dean of the School of International Studies, Peking University pointed out in his speech that younger generations from both countries should deepen their understanding of the China-U.S. relations, and that the relations between China and the United States are not a mere bipolar opposition and zero-sum game.
Afterwards, students from both universities introduced themselves and made introductory speeches in turn. They had in-depth discussions on the topics of China-U.S. cultural dialogue and global development. After the meeting, students expressed their expectations for further contacts and exchanges in the future.
After the discussion, Qi Haotian, Secretary General of iGCU of Peking University and the School of International Studies, Peking University, gave closing remarks, expressing his hope that students will gain a deeper understanding through equal exchanges with mutual respectandpromote the development of bilateral relations.
