YANG Jiechi: Adhere to the Principles of the "Shanghai Communique" and Promote the Healthy and Stable Development of China-US Relations

On February 28, 1972, Chinese and American governments issued the "Shanghai Communiqué" (Joint Communiqué of the United States of America and the People's Republic of China). As the first China-US joint communiqué, the "Shanghai Communiqué" has become a milestone in the history of China-US relations and international relations. It also effects profoundly on Asia-Pacific region and the world.

The "Shanghai Communiqué" has normalized the China-US relations.

The "Shanghai Communiqué" has established the basic norms guiding China-U.S. relations.

The "Shanghai Communiqué" has created a new model for countries with different ideologies, cultural traditions, and stages of development to handle relations.

Over the past 45 years, China-US relations have gone through ups and downs and achieved historic development, which not only benefits the people of both countries, but also contributes to regional and world peace, stability and development. At the same time, we must also realize that there are still some sensitive issues, while China-US relations are moving forward. China requires the United States to respect each other's core interests and major concerns and develop China-US relations stably.

At present, international system is in an important transition.

China and the United States have significant responsibilities in maintaining world peace and stability and promoting global development and prosperity, and they share extensive common interests. China-US cooperation is good for both countries and the world; China-US confrontation is a disaster for both countries and the world.

Both sides have to firmly grasp the correct direction of relations.

Both sides have to observe the basic norms guiding relations.

Both sides have to continue to expand pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

Both parties have to unswervingly promote cultural exchanges.
