On October 23th, 2019, Lieutenant General David Deptula, the former Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, visited our school, and delivered a lecture entitled "Three Levels of U.S.-China Relations: Government, Commerce and Non-governmental" and exchanged views with our teachers and students. This lecture was one of a series of high-level lectures organized by the Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding (iGCU) of Peking University. The meeting was presided over by Qi Haotian, Secretary-General of the Institute and Assistant Professor of the School of International Studies. Nearly 20 scholars attended this lecture including Wang Dong, Executive Deputy Director of the Institute and Vice-Minister of Offices of Humanities and Social Sciences in Peking University, Dr. Li Chen, Assistant Dean of the Renmin University of China’s School of International Studies, Jia Zifang, Assistant Professor of the China Foreign Affairs University, Dr. Lv Jinghua, a visiting scholar of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and students from the School of International Studies and Yenching Academy at Peking University.
David Deptula argued that over the past 40 years, a robust U.S.-China diplomatic partnership has contributed greatly to the economic growth of the two countries and the well-being of their people. At present, the "competition-partnership" relation between China and the U.S. has emerged and will continue to function for a long time to come. But competition does not equal conflict. The stable and prosperous relations between our two countries will not only benefit China and the U.S., but will also benefit the world. There exists both competition and broad space for cooperation between China and the United States in humanitarian relief, peacekeeping operations, disaster relief, prevention of the proliferation of nuclear weapons, information technology development and space. The students raised questions actively, and Lieutenant General David Deptula responded in detail that interested the student attendants.
