On June 12, an expert delegation from the Middle East Peace and Security Project of Germany’s Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung visited iGCU and held an exchange seminar in the Dongming Discussion Room of the School Library. The delegation engaged in an in-depth dialogue with scholars from Peking University on issues including the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, great-power competition, China’s Middle East policy, public opinion, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Peking University participants included Prof. Lin Fengmin (Deputy Director of the Department of Social Sciences at Peking University and Professor in the Department of Arabic at the School of Foreign Languages), Dr. Gao Dan (Distinguished Associate Research Fellow at the School of International Studies at Peking University), and Shen Jiqiu (Research Assistant at iGCU).
Members of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung delegation included Herta Däubler-Gmelin (Former Federal Minister of Justice of Germany), Gedaliah Afterman (Director of the Asia–Israel Policy Program at Reichman University, Israel), Hessam Habibi Doroh (International Relations Researcher at Ludovika University of Public Service, Hungary), Sebastian Sons (Berlin Representative of the Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient), Marcus Schneider (Director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s Middle East Peace and Security Project in Lebanon), Clemens Starke (Project Manager of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s Middle East Peace and Security Project), Sergio Grassi (Resident Representative of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in China), and Zhou Huijing and Zhou Qizhuolan (Project Managers at the foundation’s Beijing Office).
Through a candid and constructive dialogue, the two sides deepened their mutual understanding of each other’s perspectives and of the regional situation. The exchange laid a solid foundation for future cooperation between iGCU and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in joint research on Middle Eastern affairs, scholarly exchanges, and the cultivation of young talent. As the Dragon Boat Festival was approaching, iGCU presented the foreign guests with festive souvenirs featuring traditional Chinese cultural elements. The delegation expressed its appreciation for iGCU’s thoughtful organization and looked forward to further deepening academic partnerships in the fields of peace and security, regional governance, and China–Europe cooperation.
