A delegation from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) visited the School of International Studies at Peking University on May 28 for in-depth exchanges with Chinese scholars on a range of major international issues. The dialogue provided a valuable platform for academic engagement between China and Germany and contributed to deeper mutual understanding on geopolitical and security-related challenges.
Discussions focused on several pressing global topics, including China-U.S. relations, regional security in Asia, China-Europe relations, and developments in the Middle East.
Jia Qingguo, Member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, Professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University, and Director of the Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding (iGCU), delivered opening remarks on behalf of the Chinese side. Sergio Grassi, Resident Representative of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's China Office, addressed participants on behalf of the German delegation.
Chinese participants also included Lian Yuru, Professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University.
The German delegation featured Thomas Meyer, Honorary Chairman of the Basic Values Commission of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and former Professor of Political Science at TU Dortmund University; Marc Saxer, Head of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung; and Zhou Huijing, Project Manager at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Beijing Office.
Throughout the discussion, participants exchanged views on evolving international dynamics, regional security challenges, and opportunities for strengthening cooperation amid increasing global uncertainty. The dialogue reflected the shared interest of scholars and policy experts from both countries in promoting mutual understanding through sustained engagement and open communication.
The event concluded with a group photo session. Participants agreed that academic exchanges and policy dialogues play an important role in fostering trust and enhancing cooperation between China and Germany. Looking ahead, both sides expressed their willingness to further institutionalize exchanges, expand areas of collaboration, and contribute to the development of China-Europe relations and global governance.
