Dr. Zhao Minghao (Senior Fellow at the Center for American Studies, Fudan University and Non-Resident Fellow of iGCU) published an English commentary on China-US Focus in March, 2022. Written afterthe video call between the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the U.S. PresidentBiden, the commentary of Dr. Zhao focuses on China’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflicts, and how the conflicts might affect China’s relationships with both Russia and the U.S. He reiterates that China has close relationships with both parties, and is not intending to “pick sides” as western countries wanted. Instead of pushing China to “choose sides”, the United States (and the Western countries) should try to work with China, assume the important responsibility as great powers and promote peace. Quoted from Dr. Zhao, “diplomacy is never as simple as a one-choice question, and moral judgments often impede the search for practical diplomatic solutions. The U.S. needs toabandon the myth of democratic peace, break its obsession with absolute security, restrain its impulse toward camp confrontation and stop using petty means — rumors, coercion and intimidation — to force people to choose sides in dealing with the big crises that affect the fate of humanity.”
