On September 14, 2022, the article by Prof. Zhang Tuosheng (Speical Expert of China Forum and iGCU Academic Committee Member), “Critical moments on the Korean Peninsula”, was published in China US Focus.
In the article, Prof. Zhang first elaborates on why the situation on the Korean Peninsula has reached a new “critical point” as well as how the strategic stability in Northeast Asia is “severely challenged”, and further talks about how the current tension on the peninsula could be eased off.
In the face of the current tension, Prof. Zhang reckons that the top priority should be crisis management and an effort to prevent another nuclear standoff. Besides, major efforts to safeguard peace and stability on the peninsula and region should be accelerated. Prof. Zhang further suggests that China and the U.S. should resume dialogue on the peninsula question, and all parties concerned should make it clear that they will jointly make efforts to prevent a new crisis or military conflict. (“At present, restarting the denucleariation dialogue immediately is unrealistic, but all countries involved should unequivocally declare their pursuit of this ultimate goal.”)
At the end of the article, Prof. Zhang also highlights the crucial role that think tanks could be (has been) playing in contributing to the promotion of peace in the region, suggesting that efforts in this regard may be “useful preparation” for progress in future (governmental) denuclearization dialogue.
