China-U.S.Relations are at a delicate stage.Both governments are responsible for taking active actions to do the right things. The stable and healthy development of the bilateral relations aligns with both sides’common interests,” said Prof. Jia Qingguo.
Last week, Prof. Jia sat for an interview with The Paper, sharing his thoughts on the implications of the two leaders’ meetingin San Francisco and its potential impacts on bilateral relations.Prof. Jia believes that the face-to-face meeting of the two leaders was extremely vital and held significant symbolic value. The meeting would help promote the restora tion of dialogues and exchanges between both countries and spur consensus buildingon issues that concern both countries and identifying possible cooperation areas. Prof. Jia reckons that the meeting also provided a rather clear direction on how China-U.S. relations could develop in the near future.
Besides, Prof. Jia notes that it is too early to be optimistic about the prospects of China-U.S. relations as some “structural factors” hinder the positive development of the irbilateral ties,e.g.,the negative views that the two peoples hold against each other.
“It would be great if the China-U.S. relations could stabilize in the short run. Yet, more time and effort are needed for the ties to profoundly improve... And the best solution for that is to boost people-to-people exchanges, make the two peoples realize that China and the U.S. are not completely against each other and that both countries share mutual interests in different aspects. The two governments should encourage people to think positively about the bilateral ties, and not just solely focus on the conflicts btwn the two,” said Prof. Jia.
