The eighth Horasis Asia Meeting occurred on December 3-4, 2023, in Bình Duong, Vietnam, assembling over 600 delegates from governments, businesses, scholars, and senior practitioners worldwide to discuss Asia’s economic prospects. This year’s meeting featured six plenaries and twenty-eight dialogue sessions, emphasizing critical issues, including climate emergency, Asia and global economic transformation, supporting Asian entrepreneurs, and revitalizing Asian growth.

It is recognized that the Asia-Pacific remains the biggest driver of global economic growth in 2023. Hence, discussions mainly revolved around the significant roles of Asia-Pacific countries on the global stage, economic growth, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region, and global enterprises and industrial development. Mr.Tran Luu Quang(Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam), Mr.Vo Van Minh(Chairman of Bình Duong Province, Vietnam), and Mr.Dang Tan Duc(Director of Binh Duong Science and Technology Industrial Park, Vietnam) attended the opening ceremony and delivered keynote speeches respectively.

Prof.Wang Dong(Professor at the School of International Studies, PKU; Executive Director of iGCU)was invited to be the co-chair of the meeting and delivered a speech on the plenary themed“Asian economic outlook.”

Prof.Wang noted that according to the latest forecast from the International Monetary Fund, the economic growth rate of the Asia-Pacific region will increase from 3.8% in 2022 to 4.6% in 2023, contributing approximately 70% to global economic growth and becoming the most dynamic region in the world in 2023.Behind the optimistic attitude of international institutions towards the Asian economy is the continuous strengthening of the endogenous driving force for Asian economic development. This is reflected not only in the supporting role of major Asian economies in regional economic growth but also in the synergistic effect of economic development among Asian economies. As the largest economy in Asia,China is undoubtedly a major driving force in regional economic growth this year. The Asian Development Bank’s Asian Economic Integration Report 2023 shows that China’s contribution to the economic growth of the Asia-Pacific region has reached 64.2%, and its roles in the growth of goods and services trade are significant, contributing 37.6% and 44.6%, respectively. Prof. Wang believes that infrastructure construction lays the foundation for any city or nation to develop, and China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative (BRI) is creating new development opportunities for countries in the region by enhancing connectivity through infrastructure investment. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the BRI, and China is willing to continue to collaborate with its partners, including Vietnam, to jointly promote the high-quality development of the BRI.

The plenary was moderatedby Mr.Cuong Dang(Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes Vietnam). Discussants were Ms.Van Dang(Chief Executive Officer of Savvycom, Vietnam), Mr.John Jung(Chairman and Co-founder of Intelligent Community Forum, Canada), Mr.Don Lam(Chief Executive Officer and Founding Partner of VinaCapital, Vietnam), and Mr.Michael Yeoh(President of KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, Malaysia).
