The term ‘New Quality Productive Forces’ coined by President Xi has garnered significant attention during the #2024TwoSessions. Inarecent op-ed by Prof. Wang Yuanfeng (iGCU Academic Committee Member; Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University), he discusses the ongoing “Fourth Energy Revolution” driven by renewable energy. Prof. Wang expects this revolution to usher new quality productive forces in the energy sector and transform many industries. Prof. Wang first traces the history of human modernization through four industrial revolutions, each bringing new quality productive forces and industry transformations, with energy revolutions playing a foundational role. Next, he highlights the concept of new quality productive forces, distinct from traditional productive forces, emerging from technological breakthroughs, innovative allocation of production factors, and profound industrial transformation.
Prof. Wang anticipates that the coupling of the current renewable energy revolution with the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by AI, big data, and IoT, may drive the emergence of a “Fifth Industrial Revolution.”
