What would be the spillover effects of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election? How would different results affect China and the world and the outlook for China-US Relations? Check out Prof. WU Xinbo (Dean, Inst. of International Students of Fudan University; iGCU Academic Committee Member)’s interview for more!
Prof. WU reckons that regional conflicts worldwide present both opportunities and challenges for China-US Relations. While there is room for China-U.S. cooperation in solving these conflicts, the two countries often adopt difference stances.
In fact, China and the U.S. often hold divergent views on key issues. Thus, Prof. Wu pointed out that the disagreements on how to deal with those regional conflicts have become a source of disharmony in China-US Relations, further complicating their bilateral ties.
Turning to the upcoming U.S. election, he describes Trump as a“beneficiary”of the populism, suggesting that Trump would continue inciting populist sentiments to secure electoral victory. A second Trump administration, he believes, would result in the long-term entrenchment of populism, protectionism, and nationalism. Countries worldwide would likely need to adjust their policy to cope with these trends. The key reason people pay close attention to the U.S. elections is due to their great global impact.
As for China, Prof. Wu reckons that what matters the most at present is not about analyzing whether U.S.’China policies would change after the election. Instead, China should focus on elevating its own capabilities, reducing its reliance on the U.S. market, capital, and technology. By preparing comprehensively, China can better navigate and cope with the evolving, complicated and unfavorable external environment.
