To address challenges arising from the new international environment, Prof. Zha stresses the importance for China maintaining vitality in its domestic industries, working to bridge the regional development, and learning from the experiences of high-income countries like Japan.
He further noted that discussions related to China-USrelations has been more emotionally charged since 2017. With face-to-face communications gradually restoring, scholars of the 2 countries are restarting academic discussions on less sensitive issues like climate change and AI regulations.
Prof. Zha indicated that, historically, in the subconscious of the U.S. elites, the U.S. to interacting with China is essentially a gesture of‘benevolence’, and thus would expect China’s gratitude in return. Contrarily, in the conception of the Chinese elites, the essence of any bilateral relationship should be about achieving greater harmony, mutual learning and understanding, and making progress together. For any country, the main option is to always adapt to a constantly evolving ecology of international interactions.
