Prof. Zhang Tuosheng:Managing Security Risks in Northeast Asia Region, Resume China-Japan-ROK Trilateral Cooperation

Prof.ZHANG Tuosheng(Senior Research Fellow, China Foundation for Int’l Strategic Studies; iGCU Academic Committee Member), published an op-ed in August titled, “ManagingSecurity Risks in Northeast Asia Region, ResumeChina-Japan-ROKTrilateralCooperation”.

Prof. Zhang indicates that in recent years, against the backdrop of theU.S.’strategiccompetition withChina,thesituation in Northeast Asiahasdeteriorated, escalatingsecurity risks,and China-Japan-ROKtrilateralcooperationhas suffered.

Prof. Zhang underpinned the significance of the three countries restoring and further promoting dialogue to effectively manage security risks and challenges in the region,andfacilitate regional economicdevelopment. Key efforts include:Properly addressing challenges tomaritimesecurityand freedom of navigation, including existing controversies overmaritimeinterests, great power rivalry, and expanding non-traditional security threats;Restoring dialogueson nuclear non-proliferation on the Korean Peninsula;c)Improvingthepolitical, economic, and technological environmentto facilitate regional peace and prosperity;d)Strengthening mutual trust and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.On how to strengthen security cooperation btwn the 3 countries, Prof. Zhang suggests the leaders toengage in more high-level politicaldiscussionstobuild greaterconsensus.
