On December 19th, 2014, Dr. Ji-Young Lee, Assistant Professor of American University delivered a speech themed "Viewing the Rise of China in the East Asia from a Historical Perspective" at the luncheon of School of International Studies. Associate Professor Gui Yongtao of School of International Studies presided over the seminar. By analyzing the tributary system centered on China in ancient times, Dr. Lee explored the significance of historical experience in understanding China' s rise today. Based on that, she questioned two popular views on the rise of China. The first one worries that China may learn from its past tributary system and reestablish its regional domination, while the other believes that Japan and South Korea should seek security cooperation to fight against China' s rise. Prof. Zhang Zhirong, Dr. Xiang Zuotao and some master and doctoral students and English program students participated in the seminar. In the Q&A session, the participating teachers and students had heated discussions and interactions with Dr. Lee.
