The opening ceremony was chaired by Fan Shiming, Vice Dean of Peking University School of International Studies, with opening addresses from Vice President of Peking University Wang Jie, former President of Latvia and NGIC co-chair Vaira Vike-Freiberga and President of Pangoal Institution Yi Peng.

The forum attracted high attention from heads of states and governments in countries along the Belt and Road. Ambassadors from Macedonia, Albania and Azerbaijan read the letters from the respective president of each of their countries congratulating on the convening of the forum. Then, Long Yongtu, member of the Advisory Committee of the Boao Forum for Asia and former Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation delivered the keynote address. He shared China’s intentions for launching the Belt and Road Initiative and explained the spirit of peace, mutual benefits, prosperity and good faith encompassed in the initiative.

The forum divided into 5 groups, each discussing one topic – Future of International Relations: China in the Age of Globalization, China’s Role in the Global Economic System, China as a Contributor to Global Safety, China in the Age of Interconnectivity: Understanding the Belt and Road Initiative, and China as a Contributor of Global Governance.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Fan Shiming, with closing addresses from Ismail Serageldin, Deputy Director of Pangoal Institution Academic Committee Bai Yunfeng and Vaira Vike-Freiberga. Over two short days, the delegates reached multiple consensuses on the development trends of globalization and China’s role in the process and put forward feasible suggestions. The Belt and Road Initiative is bringing closely together with China and countries along the Belt and Road to enable all the countries involved to ride the wave of globalization in concert.
