Feb. 28th 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Communiqué. IFENG News, Pheonix New Mediaand iGCU co-organized the Seminar for the Consensus on New Engagement in Sino-US Relations & Forum to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Shanghai Communiqué. Influential experts in Sino-U.S. relations were invited to discuss the evolution of Sino-U.S. relations over the past decades, and share their viewpoints on the dynamics of Sino-U.S. trade relations, people-to-people exchanges, etc.
Mr. Zou Ming (Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of IFENG News) and Prof. Jia Qingguo (Director of iGCU) delivered their opening remarks respectively at the beginning of the forum. Prof. Jia believes that President Nixon’s visit was the outcome of both the wisdom and courage of both Chinese and American leaders. Prof. Jia further points out that tracing back to the history of Sino-U.S. relations, it is as a matter of fact that confrontations and antagonism were, and would never be helpful to the solution of current challenges that both countries are facing. Sino-U.S. competitions would bring disastrous effects to not only the two countries, but also the world. Prof. Jia raises that only when the relationships between China and the U.S. become amicable, the two countries could coexist peacefully and cooperate to maximize the benefits for both.
The Forum was comprised of three parallel sessions. The theme of the first session was: “New Direction for Sino-U.S. Relations: Cooperation on Economy and Technology.” Mr.Stephen Orlins(President of theNational Committee on U.S.-China Relations), Prof. Li Cheng (Director of John L. Thornton China CenterThe Brookings Institution), Prof. Gao Xiqing (Emeritus Professor at School of LawTsinghua University),Joshua Cooper Ramo(former Co-Chief Executive Officer of Kissinger Associates), and Prof. Tao Wenzhao (Honorary Member of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), participated in the first session and exchanged their views on the prospects of China-U.S. cooperation in the sectors like trade, economy, and technology. The theme of the second session was: “People-to-people exchanges between China and the U.S.” Prof. Wang Dong (Executive Director of iGCU) and Mr. David W. Ferguson (Honorary English Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Languages Press) talked about the intercultural exchanges between China and U.S. in recent years. Prof. Wang believes that the creation of artistic works could be similar to the conduction of academic research, in the sense that both would need to address with rigour and proper freshness. It is of great significance of creators from both countries to respect historical facts and show considerable delicacy when using arts to convey messages.
The final session of the forum was centered around military stand-offs between China and the U.S. Ms. Susan Thornton (former Acting Assistant Secretary for East Asian & Pacific Affairs at the Dept.of State of the U.S.), Prof. Shi Yinhong (Director of U.S. Research Center of the Renmin University of China and former Consultant of the State Council of the P.R.C.), Prof. Zhu Feng (Dean of School of International Studies at Nanjing University), Prof. Robert Ross (Research Fellow of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University), and Prof. Tao Wenzhao (Honorary Member of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) participated in the third round of discussions.
