On August 26, the first session of “China-U.S. Think Tanks Gathering” academic salon of the U.S. -China Young Scholars Forum was successfully held in the office of Global Times. The topic of whether China-U.S. relations are approaching the “critical point” was discussed at the salon. At the salon, Jin Canrong, Sun Zhe, Pang Zhongying, Wang Dong were appointed as advisors of the Advisory Committee of the U.S. -China Young Scholars Forum.


Nine renowned experts and scholars and more than 30 young scholars from all over the country were invited to the salon. At the salon, experts and scholars spoke out freely about the future of China-U.S. relations. They had wonderful discussions on such focus issues as President Xi’s visit to the US, forging a new type of China-U.S. relations, network security and AIIB. Nine guests present at the salon included Hu Xijin, Editor-in-chief of the Global Times, Sun Zhe, Director of Center for U.S.-China Relations, Institute of International Relations, Tsinghua University, Jin Canrong, Associate Dean of School of International Relations, Renmin University of China, Pang Zhongying, Dean of the Institute of International Studies, School of International Relations, Sun Yat-sen University, Fan Jishe, a research fellow of Institute of American Studies, CASS, Wang Dong, Associate Professor of the School of International Studies, Peking University, Li Xiaoning, Academic Member of China Institute of Strategy and Management, Major General Hao Yeli, former Deputy Director of the Fourth Department of China PLA General Political Department, and Qin An, Deputy Director of China Information Security.


To further enhance its influence and academic level and attract young scholars, the Advisory Committee of the U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum was set up. The advisors will be selected from renowned Chinese and American experts and scholars who study the China-U.S. relations and will further participate in the series of activities of the U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum and provide guidance and suggestions for the academic research of young scholars. Sun Zhe, Jin Canrong, Pang Zhongying and Wang Dong were appointed as the first batch of advisors by the Global Times and the Carter Center. Hu Xijin, Editor-in-chief of the Global Times, issued the employment certificates to the four advisors. Hu Xijin said that the influence and forceful articles on the diplomacy of Global Times count on everyone’s support. Hu Xijin said that China-U.S. relations are not only about diplomacy, but also about China’s ideology, which is the source and starting point of many problems. Any interpretation of China-U.S. relations cannot be overstated. The attention and strength invested by the Chinese society in the China-U.S. relations is incredible. The Global Times will work to promote the engagement of experts and young scholars in researches and will give more support to China-U.S. relations. It’s a mutually supportive process. He hoped that we could further strengthen communication and cooperation in the future, and work together to make this work more fruitful.


About the U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum


The U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum is an academic exchange held by the Global Times and the Carter Center. It aims to provide a platform for young Chinese and American scholars for communication and mutual understanding. In addition, renowned Chinese and foreign scholars for China-U.S. relations will be invited to the U.S.-China Young Scholars Forum to comment on the academic achievements of young scholars attending the Forum and exchange views on hot issues with them. The first US-China Young Scholars Forum was held in September 2014 in Xi’an, China, attended and addressed by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The second U.S. -China Young Scholars Forum will be held in Atlanta, USA, in October 2015.


About the “China-U.S. Think Tanks Gathering” academic salon


In 2014, the First U.S. -China Young Scholars Forum was successfully held. It was focused and supported by young scholars. In order to provide more opportunities for young scholars who are enthusiastic in the study of China-U.S. relations, the Global Times and the Carter Center will hold the “China-U.S. Think Tanks Gathering” academic salon on the basis of the US-China Young Scholars Forum from 2015. The salon will invite Chinese and foreign scholars to discuss hot issues on China-U.S. relations or renowned scholars to give speeches. The salon strove to create an inclusive, open and free space for discussion, and to build a platform for the exchange and communication of young Chinese and American scholars.
