The China-U.S.-South Korea Trilateral Non-official Dialogue in the U.S.

From December 15 to 16, 2014, Jia Qingguo, Director of Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding and Dean of School of International Studies, Peking University led a delegation from the school to participate in the second round meeting of China-U.S.-South Korea Trilateral Non-official Dialogue held by the Brookings Institution, a U.S. think tank. Professor Wang Zhengyi, Professor Zha Daojiong and Professor Zhang Qingmin from School of International Studies, Peking University and Professor Zhu Feng, Executive Director of Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies of Nanjing University, and Professor Qiu Huafei, Deputy Dean of School of International Studies of Tongji University participated in the dialogue.

On the first day, the dialogue was conducted in the form of closed-door consultation, which was presided over by Jia Qingguo, Ambassador Park In-kook, Chief of Affairs of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies and Professor Jonathan Pollack, Senior Researcher of East Asia policies of Brookings Institution. The participants discussed topics such as “Challenges faced by the international order”, “China-U.S.-South Korea trilateral relations”, “Peace and security in Northeast Asia”, “Challenges and uncertainties faced by the international economic order”. On behalf of Chinese scholars, Jia Qingguo, Qiu Huafei, Zhu Feng and Zha Daojiong spoke on different topics. The participants then engaged in open and deep communications and exchanges on related topics.

A public meeting was held on the second day. Daniel Russel, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State in charge of East Asia affairs, delivered a keynote speech on the U.S.’s East Asia policies, and expounded on the U.S.’ views regarding its East Asia policies, especially its relations with China. Jia Qingguo, Park In-kook, Jonathan Pollack delivered speeches. After that, the participants engaged in discussions around three topics: “challenges faced by the international order and the China-U.S. relations”, “relations between South Korea and the U.S.” and “future of the region’s economy”. Zhang Qingmin, Jia Qingguo and Wang Zhengyi gave their views and comments on the three topics respectively. C-Span of the U.S. broadcasted live the public meeting.

The China-U.S.-South Korea Trilateral Dialogue was sponsored by the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, and co-organized by the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, Center for East Asia Policies of Brookings Institution and School of International Studies, Peking University. The new round of dialogue will be held from April 3 to 4, 2014 in Seoul, South Korea. Based on the agreement, the next round of dialogue will be held in Peking University next year.
