From December 3 to 5, 2014, the third session of the series international seminars concerning maritime rights and interests initiated by the Research Center for Global Governance of Peking University and the Northeast Asia Research Center of Cornell University was held in National Institute for South China Sea Studies in Haikou. The conference was jointly organized by the Research Center for Global Governance of Peking University, Northeast Asia Research Center of Cornell University and National Institute for South China Sea Studies. The theme was “New Maritime Safety in East Asia: Coordinating Visions of China and the U.S. on Sea Order”. Nearly 20 experts and scholars in the fields of international relations and international laws from Peking University, National Institute for South China Sea Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Cornell University, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Asahi Shimbun, Royal Denmark Institute of National Defense Research, National Defense University and other U.S. research institutes participated in this conference.
On the morning of December 4, Professor Jia Qinguo, Dean of School of International Studies, gave opening remarks. According to Professor Jia Qingguo, several topics will be discussed during the first two rounds of the international seminar concerning maritime rights and interests, including the relationship between the construction of a new type of great power relationship between China and the U.S. and settlement of the East Sea dispute, the intersection of maritime rights and interests of China and the U.S., the role played by the international laws in settling maritime rights and interests disputes, collaboration and crisis management of various stakeholders and the regional perspective of China-U.S. maritime relationship. He expressed his faith in obtaining expected results from the seminar with the joint efforts of everyone.
At the seminar, the participating scholars expressed their views based on their own studies and engaged in heated discussions. The seminar came to a successful end at 5pm. By convention, the participating scholars will further modify their theses based on the problems and criticisms raised in the discussions and then publish collected papers.
