The Samuel R. ‘Sandy’ Berger Memorial Fellowship Launches at Peking University

On Oct.18, 2019, the Samuel R. “Sandy” Berger Memorial Fellowship was launched in Peking University. The fellowship was set up by the Peking University Education Foundation (USA). The series of activities involved included a launching ceremony, High-Level Forum on China-US Relations and Academic Seminar on the Prospects of China-US Relations. A total of 120 participants attended the event, including faculty and students from Peking University and other institutions of higher education and delegates from the US.

Entrusted by Susan Berger, widow of the late Honorable Samuel Berger, former US National Security Advisor to the President, Julia Chang Bloch, President of the US-China Education Trust and former US Ambassador to Nepal, proposed the establishment of the Berger Memorial Fellowship to empower young Chinese scholars to deepen the scope their research into America and promote China-US academic exchanges as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Following a review, the Peking University Education Foundation (USA) approved a donation to establish the Peking University School of International Studies Berger Memorial Fellowship. Julia Chang Bloch came to China specially to attend the launching ceremony with a letter written by Susan Berger. Also present at the ceremony were Qiu Yuanping, former Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of China, Terry Branstad, the US Ambassador to China, Carlos Gutierrez, former US Secretary of Commerce and Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, Nicholas Platt, former US Ambassador to Pakistan and former President of the Asia Society, Wang Bo, Counselor of the Department of American Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Lynn Zhao, President of Peking university Education Foundation (USA).

The launch ceremony was chaired by Wang Dong, Executive Director of iGCU and Associate Professor of School of International Studies. Also present at the ceremony were Peking University Vice President Wang Bo, Director of International Cooperation Department Xia Hongwei, iGCU Director and School of International Studies Professor Jia Qingguo and Vice Dean Zhang Haibin.
