Brief Introduction to the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism

Development

During Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to the UK in June 2011, he reached an agreement with British Prime Minister David Cameron on the establishment of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism. Both sides agreed that the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism should be brought into play to promote bilateral cooperation in education, culture, youth and media.

On April 16, 2012, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chaired the first meeting and launching ceremony of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in London, England, signed theMemorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanismand theJoint Statement of the First Meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism, and determined the bilateral cooperation in education, science & technology, culture, media, sports and youth. The China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism was formally established.

On September 6, 2014, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chaired the second meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in Beijing, China, and signedthe Joint Statement of the Second Meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.Health was incorporated into the areas of cooperation at the second meeting of the Mechanism.

On September 17, 2015, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chaired the third meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in London, England, and signed theJoint Statement of the Third Meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.Tourism and sub-national cooperation were incorporated into the areas of cooperation at the third meeting of the Mechanism.The second meeting of the Mechanism generated over 300 exchange in various fields.

On December 6, 2016, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chaired the fourth meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in Shanghai, China, and signed theJoint Statement of the Fourth Meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.

On December 7, 2017, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt co-chaired the fifth meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in London, England, and signed theJoint Statement of the Fifth Meeting of the China-UK High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.Both sides summarized a list of 71 cooperation achievements in various fields since the establishment of the Mechanism in 2012 and a list of 40 cooperation achievements in various fields for the next stage.Social equality and women were incorporated into the areas of cooperation at the fifth meeting of the Mechanism.

On February 1, 2018, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with British Prime Minister Theresa May on her official visit to China at the Diaoyutai Guesthouse in Beijing.Xi Jinping pointed out that the UK was the first western power that recognized the New China.Since the establishment of the diplomatic tie, bilateral cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results.China is willing to cooperate with the UK to promote the healthy and stable development of China-UK relations in the new era.Theresa May hoped that the UK and China could carry out the Belt and Road cooperation to promote global and regional economic growth.↵She also hoped that hoped to strengthen pragmatic cooperation with China in trade, investment, science & technology, environment, culture and Internet to advance the UK-China global comprehensive strategic partnership in the 21stcentury.
