The Big Year in the China-Europe Relationship Calls for a Final Exam Awareness

[Author] FENG Zhongping

[Extract]2020 is a big year in China-Europe relations. In 2014, President Xi Jinping proposed China and Europe should strengthen partnerships for peace, growth, reform and civilization. With China-U.S. strategic competition intensifying, China has attached greater importance to developing relations with Europe. On the other hand, after going through multiple challenges and crises, the cry of the European countries for revitalization and holding their future in their own hands is growing. As a result, their emphasis on China is even greater than before. In such a context, China and Europe will hold three summits within the year 2020, including the meeting of China’s leader with newly elected EU leaders, the17+1 Beijing Summit (including China, Central and Eastern European countries, and Greece), and the China-EU special summit to be held in Leipzig, Germany, which is also known as the 27+1 summit, including China and all the EU member states.
