Brief Introduction to the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism

In November 2014, Premier Li Keqiang and met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and expressed the hope that both sides could strengthen people-to-people exchange to boost the relationship of the two peoples and provide a sustained impetus for the China-Indonesia longstanding friendship. During Indonesian President Joko Widodo's visit to China in March 2015, presidents of both countries reached a series of important consensus to support the establishment of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism headed by the Chinese Vice Premier in charge of people-to-people exchange and the Minister of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Indonesia.

On May 27, 2015, the first meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism was held in Jakarta. The meeting was co-chaired by then Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Puan Maharani, Minister of Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. Both sides reaffirmed the important consensus on the establishment of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism reached by the two presidents, reviewed the important progress of China-Indonesia people-to-people exchange, and provided guidance and overall planning for the future development of China-Indonesia people-to-people exchange. Both sides issued the Joint Communique of the First Meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.

On August 1, 2016, the second meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism was held in Guiyang. The meeting was co-chaired by then Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Puan Maharani, Minister of Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. Both sides issued the Joint Communique of the Second Meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.

On November 28, 2017, the third meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism was held in Solo. The meeting was co-chaired by then Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Puan Maharani, Minister of Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. Both sides issued the Minutes of the Third Meeting of the China-Indonesia Vice-Premier People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.

On June 28, 2019, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Osaka. President Xi Jinping pointed out that the year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Indonesia, and that both countries should make further efforts to achieve a new situation of mutual benefit and joint development. Both sides should enhance experience sharing in governance and administration of state affairs, construct the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and the Regional Integrated Economic Corridor, expand cooperation in vocational training and upgrade the Belt and Road cooperation. China is willing to carry out cooperation with ASEAN countries in smart cities and digital economy, and make technology-led and innovation-driven national and regional development become the new driving force.

Positioning

People-to-people exchange is the public opinion foundation for China-Indonesia relations and the important driving force for the sustained and in-depth development of bilateral relations.  To strengthen the China-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership from the new historical starting point, we must rely on the active support and extensive participation of the peoples and all sectors of society of the two countries, thus to build a unified framework and platform for people-to-people exchange, and provide strong support and guarantee for enriching exchange channels, broadening exchange fields and deepening the cooperation connotation.

Cooperation fields

Education, science & technology, culture, health, media, youth, tourism and sports. Under the framework of the Mechanism, both sides have also carried out active exchange in panda conservation research and cultural relic protection.

Brand activities

Culture

The establishment of the China-Indonesia University-affiliated Think Tank Alliance has yielded fruitful results in cultural and academic exchange and research between the two countries.

Hi-Indo, the first localized overseas Chinese channel constructed and operated in a commercialized model by CITVC with right of independence.

Education

Chinese and Indonesian universities and research institutions have jointly established the China-Indonesia High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Joint Laboratory and the China-Indonesia High-speed Railway Research Center for joint research.

Implemented China-Indonesian Public Health Talent Cooperation Cultivation Program.

Science & technology

China's pandas have settled in Indonesia, and China and Indonesia have jointly carried out researches on panda conservation.

Youth

Implemented the Exchange Program of 100-member Delegation of Chinese and Indonesian Youths.
