Development

The year 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Germany diplomatic ties. With the in-depth development of China-Germany all-round strategic partnership, both countries need to enhance mutual understanding, seek common ground and narrow differences, and consolidate the public and social opinion foundation for the all-round cooperation through people-to-people exchange. On May 24, Vice Premier Liu Yandong of the State Council and Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Germany Sigmar Gabriel co-chaired the first meeting of the China-Germany High-level People-to-people Exchange and Dialogue Mechanism, issued the Statement on the Establishment of the China-Germany High-level People-to-people Exchange and Dialogue Mechanism, signed cooperation agreements on seven fields including education, culture and sports, and determined 25 key programs for people-to-people exchange for 2017-2018.

In September 2018, the seventh China Times series was launched at the city hall auditorium in Hamburg, with more than 300 friendly personages in Chinese and German politics and business circles attending the opening ceremony. Launched in 2006 by the Hamburg Municipal Government, the China Times series has grown into an important event that can promote the development of bilateral relations.

On March 26, 2019, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Paris. He was here to attend the closing ceremony of the China-France Global Governance Forum. President Xi Jinping stressed that cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win results is the only correct choice to solve global issues. Both sides can strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, new materials, new energies, life sciences and smart cities.

The China-Germany High-level People-to-people Exchange and Dialogue Mechanism enjoys equal status and complementary functions with the China-Germany High-level Financial Dialogue Mechanism and the China-Germany High-level Security Dialogue Mechanism, and is a useful supplement to the negotiation between the Chinese and German governments.
