[Summary]

After Modi came to power in the May of 2014, India has intervened deeper and had more "bold" behaviors in the South China Sea, which makes a breakthrough in Singh government' s policy. This trend is a new manifestation of India' s overall foreign policy towards the US and Japan, and also out of realistic needs of India' s "Act towards the east" policy. At the same time, it is also related to the new problems of Sino-India relations. But there is still little possibility that India will patrol the South China Sea with the US and Japan. Since the beginning of 2006, India has flip-flopped several times on the South China Sea issue, which indirectly shows that India only takes the South China Sea as a bargaining chip with China, instead of core benefits. Therefore, as long as we manage and stabilize the overall Sino-India relations, we can prompt India to stay restrained from taking the same position with the US and Japan.
