The year 2018 is an extraordinary year in the history of China-India relations. President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a landmark meeting in Wuhan and meet on three multilateral occasions, which defined the future direction of China-India relations and ushered the bilateral cooperation into a new stage of development.

From December 21 to 24, 2018, invited by Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs, Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister, visited India and co-chaired with Swaraj the first meeting of the China-India High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism. The success of the meeting marked the official launch of the China-India High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism.

On August 12, 2019, Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, co-chaired the second meeting of the China-India High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism in Beijing. They signed the 2020 Action Plan on Exchange and Cooperation between the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs, India, and documents of bilateral cooperation in culture, sports, traditional medicine and museums. It is agreed that more colorful people-to-people exchange will be held in 2020 which marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and India.

Positioning

The establishment of the China-India High-level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism is an important initiative in the history of China-India relations. The Mechanism is an important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi, and reflects the great importance and high expectation of the two leaders for China-India people-to-people exchange.
